Lessons learned from the perspective of health care facility managers, clinicians, and executive staff.

Every hospital conducts hazard vulnerability assessments as part of emergency operations planning. This assessment is crucial to assure the safety of patients, staff, and visitors during an emergency. In 2011 a tornado in Joplin, Missouri, devastated a community, including Mercy hospital. Mercy’s incredible story offers an opportunity to assess your facility’s emergency preparedness and to use their lessons learned to better prepare for potential future emergencies. This DVD includes a 30-minute video detailing the hospital’s response during the events of the Joplin tornado as well as three other videos, one each from the perspectives of the hospital administrators, the clinicians, and the facility staff who endured this event. These stories are intended to provide your staff with firsthand accounts of what can happen during a disaster. They can be used as a tool to provoke new insights as you launch a hazard vulnerability assessment process at your facility.
