Description:

SHSMD U 2018 Online Course “Designing & Building a User-Centered Web Site"

Dates: March 5-April 13

Presenters:

Stephen Strong, Director of Digital, Northwestern Medicine

Paul Brienza, Sr Vice President, Interactive Branding, Laughlin/Constable

Case Study by: Andrew Cousin, Director of Marketing and Product Management; Andrew Tofilon, Marketing Segment Manger; Brent Westra, Segment Manager, all from Mayo Medical Laboratories

It’s one of the largest, most complicated, most political, most challenging and, ultimately, most critical projects today’s marketer can tackle: designing and building a user centered web site. In this 6-week course, veterans of a recent, large website launch will share insights from their journey that may help you avoid roadblocks, plan for the unexpected, and ultimately find your way when you set out on a similar course.

Hear about Northwestern Medicine’s journey to launch – the opportunities and learnings they experienced, the obstacles that challenged success and the valuable “in the trenches” learnings that helped them reach their goal.

Following several mergers, Northwestern Medicine had grown into a system of 7 hospitals and 100+ locations throughout Chicago and Northern Illinois. But while those mergers enhanced NM’s medical capabilities and expanded patient access to care, they also created a web presence of more than 260 different websites. A new digital strategy was developed to account for every potential digital touchpoint between NM and their physicians, patients and prospects, and a diligent, disciplined process focused on engaging consumers along their healthcare decision journey, leading not just to improved awareness and preference, but also more meaningful and valuable relationships. A thoughtful plan was in place to reach their goal of a new, integrated site. Challenge met and answered, right?

But NM soon learned that navigating a carefully and thoughtfully set course can present unique and unanticipated challenges, any of which had the potential to threaten the project's success. Join Northwestern Medicine and their digital partner, Laughlin Constable to learn about NM’s journey to launch – the opportunities and pitfalls they experienced, the obstacles that threatened success and the valuable “in the trenches” learnings that helped them reach their goal of a new, integrated nm.org.

Presenters from Mayo Medical Laboratories, the global outreach arm of Mayo Clinic's Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, will also share a case study on "Insights", an online hub publication the launched in 2016, to address changing market needs. The hub manages complex information and presents it in a manner that is accessible, meaningful, and actionable to the diverse audiences they serve. They will share their journey, both the successes and mistakes, and provide a template that can be used toward tailored communication change.
